Dancing with Evo Morales - Bolivia
Dancing with Evo Morales - Bolivia
May 2006 He jokes that he's America's worst nightmare and plans to nationalise Bolivia's oil industry and overturn the old social order. As yet another South American country 'goes left', we profile Bolivia's new President. As a former union leader, Evo Morales is more accustomed to attacking governments than leading them. But Bolivia's first ever indigenous President has ambitious plans for his country. "Sooner or later there must be a profound transformation", he vows. "I want a new economic model." Morales' first objective is to seize back control of the country's national assets, including its enormous natural gas reserves. "Oligarchies won't just give up. They want to continue sucking the Bolivian people's blood." A series of forced privatisations imposed by the World Bank and IMF left Bolivia the poorest country in Latin America. Now, Morales has pledged to renegotiate existing oil contracts. Actions like this -- and his close friendship with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro -- have sent shivers down Washington's spine. But any heavy-handed action from the White House could backfire. As analyst Jim Shultz explains: "America's fear is that it will push Bolivia into the arms of Hugo Chavez." Bolivia in Protest
Bolivia in Protest
At least eight people were killed as violent anti-government protests flared in Bolivia on Thursday, creating havoc in the natural gas industry and raising tensions with the United States. The opposition demands greater autonomy and energy revenue and opposes plans by Morales, a former coca farmer and Bolivia's first indigenous president, to rewrite the constitution and distribute land to the poor. Read the entire Article: www.reuters.com The conflict stems from a power struggle between Morales and the governors of regions in eastern and central provinces with vast natural gas reserves and rich farmland.

On May 23rd I entered Bolivia from Peru to tour the country when I was stopped by protestors who had begun to set up barricades throughout the country. This revolt centered in La Paz swelled from 80000 protestors to half a million by early June and caused President Mesa to resign on June 6th. The protestors were demanding the nationalization of the hydrocarbon industry and to give more power to the indigenous majority.

While bananas and sugarcane copped the full force of Cyclone Yasi, an emerging tropical fruit industry in North Queensland has also been tested by mother nature. The country's leading commercial achacha plantation near Townsville has made it through the cyclone and three floods in recent years. But as Kerry Staight reports, the biggest challenge may lay ahead - convincing Australian consumers to invest in a fruit most have never heard of.

From Trash to Toys in Bolivia
From Trash to Toys in Bolivia
It was almost two decades ago that Jose Nuñez realized he didn't have enough money to buy a Christmas gift for his son, and so he decided to put together discarded metal parts to make a toy jeep. Little did he know that he had found both his calling...and his very own cottage industry. Nuñez's talent to convert discarded metal products into toys originated while growing up near the mines where his father worked. His success with the first Christmas "Willy" Jeep inspired him to make a batch of eight such automobiles. And after fulfilling his Santa Claus duties to his child, Nunez made his first sales with the remaining eight trucks out of the Kuper workshop where he continues to work along with his wife, Lydia. [Jose Nuñez, Artist]: (male, spanish) "A can of sardines became a car. It moved around well, was rechargeable, and repairs could be made when necessary. If a wire got worn out, it could be replaced with another, and it worked. What's important is that it moved around, charged up, and that's what I wanted. And I couldn't do that with other toys, like American ones that were very beautiful, but very delicate." At that first Christmas market, his eight jeeps sold in just three minutes. That inspired Nuñez to start making other vehicles and metallic structures. He now gathers his base parts for the toy production at second-hand markets, and even at garbage dumps. [Jose Nuñez, Artist]: (male, spanish) "For the production of these toys, I recycle spare car parts that are ...

Leading economic expert Jim Rogers traveled to 150 countries over 150000 miles in three years - follow his adventures here on FentonReport. In this video Jim and Paige visit Sucre, Bolivia. Copyright Jim Rogers - provided as a special contribution to The Fenton Report. www.fentonreport.com Sucre (population 247300 in 2006) is the constitutional capital of Bolivia, seat of the Supreme Court (Corte Suprema de Justicia), and capital of the Chuquisaca department. Located in the south-central part of the country, Sucre lies at an altitude of 2750m (9000ft). Its lower altitude gives the city a warm temperate climate year-round. On November 30, 1538 Sucre was founded under the name Ciudad de la Plata de la Nueva Toledo by Pedro Anzures, Marqués de Campo Redondo. In 1538 the Spanish King Philip II established the Audiencia de Charcas in La Plata with authority over an area which covers what is now Paraguay, southeastern Peru, Northern Chile and Argentina, and much of Bolivia. The Audiencia de Charcas was a subdivision of the Viceroyalty of Peru. In 1601 the Recoleta Monastery was founded by the Franciscans and in 1609, an archbishopric was founded in the city. In 1624, St Francis Xavier University of Chuquisaca was founded. Very much a Spanish city during the colonial era, the narrow streets of the city centre are organised in a grid, reflecting the Andalusian culture that is embodied in the architecture of the city's great houses and numerous convents and churches. Entry from: Cochabamba, Bolivia Entry Title: "Cochabamba" Entry: "Cochabamba was not according to the guidebook really a tourist´s heaven. But as we have read and heard so many times, tourist attractions and places that are worth a visit are not always the best (those listed in the guidebook). We arrived in Cochabamba in the morning and had a good time there despite us both suffering from a couple of days illness. The food probably being the protagonist once again. Cochabamba was a nice place, busy, cheap and a certain go-go-go factor about the place. Gringos were few and far between. The square, Plaza Colon was an idyllic place to chill out and watch the world go-by, or as we quickly noticed, one of the morning protests perhaps. The one we saw were the marcha for the Agricultural Workers and one for the Teachers Union the following day- both asking for higher wages at the Plaza 14 de Septiembre. The image of protests in the UK is often a derrogatory one, which is not justified as the protest were vociferous but yet respectful at the same time. Plaza Colon is worth a visit too, a more picturresque square than the former and nice to relax at after a large meal or simply consuming an ice cream in the afternoon sun. Also if your James then read the World Cup news in the local Spanish paper. Due to ...
